Since its publication in 2016, The Nutshell Technique: Crack the Secret of Successful Screenwriting was an instant classic. It is the go-to manual many professionals swear by, and it’s on the syllabus for courses at University of Houston, University of Notre Dame, and the world renowned screenwriting program at Columbia University. Alumna Louise Lynch is a 2017 semifinalist in both the Academy Nicholl Competition and Austin Film Festival with her screenplay God’s Law.
Previous alumni recognized by Academy Nicholl Competition include Rosaia Shepard who was a semifinalist with The City of N.O., Andrew Olson who was a quarterfinalist with The Bubblegum Killer, andHannah Feller with her screenplay War Love, which made it to the semifinals of both the Academy Nicholls Competition and Austin Film Festival. Hannah has taken The Screenplay Workshop six times and has six scripts to show for it — and a Hollywood manager! You may recall our previous announcement that another of her scripts, The Money Flight, had been optioned.
The Academy Nicholl Competition is awarded by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (the same organization that administers the Oscars) and is — hands down — the most prestigious screenwriting competition that there is.
Austin Film Society invited The Screenplay Workshop to present a special three-hour intensive at Austin Studios. Austin Chronicle sent a reporter, and here’s what she had to say about our signature method, the acclaimed Nutshell Technique:
“The Nutshell Technique aims to pinpoint the heart of the story and eliminate glitches and gaps, and judging from my experience in the three-hour intensive, it does exactly that…The clarity achieved in only three hours was remarkable. Weeks later, my ideas continue to churn, and I have already referred back to my Nutshell worksheet. I ought to laminate this thing.”
Program alumna Kat Candler‘s feature film Hellion had a successful run, playing in 30+ cities across the U.S. to great reviews. The Washington Post called it “a tough, uncompromising little film” with a “sterling” cast. If you missed it, you still have your chance: it’s now available on Netflix.
Kat directed her own script, as she has for two out of three of her previously produced feature films. When Kat sat in on The Screenplay Workshop’s Master Class in 2009, she was already an accomplished filmmaker with two feature films to her credit as Writer/Director, Cicadas (2000) and Jumping Off Bridges (2006).
Austin Film Society’s Slackerwood website recently sent a correspondent to sit in our story structure class and what did he say? “This class couldn’t have been more helpful” and “one of the more thought-provoking ways to analyze the structure of a screenplay.” Read the whole review…
