Update on Jill’s Book

A little over a year ago, I signed a contract with the University of Texas Press to write a book on the Nutshell Technique, the screenplay structuring method I created that’s the cornerstone of The Screenplay Workshop’s curriculum. This newsletter is going to be shorter than usual, because I’m busy putting the final touches on my manuscript.

The Nutshell Technique uses a one-page schematic — aka the Nutshell — that identifies eight elements all stories must have. In the book, I explain the technique by looking at successful films and showing how the eight Nutshell elements play out in them. Writers in my workshops — and soon readers of my book — are encouraged to identify these eight elements in their own plots and to use the Nutshell schematic to ensure these dynamic elements are working together properly. It’s a very straightforward way to craft the strongest possible story.

I’m thrilled with how the book turned out. The book includes the same Nutshell schematic filled out for 30 great but very different films including Casablanca, Chinatown, Pulp Fiction, Memento, Juno, Argo, August: Osage County, and some 23 more.

The Nutshell Technique: Crack the Secret of Successful Screenplays will be in bookstores and on Amazon in February 2016. It’ll be available for pre-order in November 2015. In the meantime, you can sign up for a workshop or private consultation if you want to learn the one and only Nutshell Technique.

Sincerely,
Jill Chamberlain
