Through it, individuals who are Austin residents can apply to receive funding of up to $1,000 to attend workshops, like the ones at The Screenplay Workshop. Up to $12,500 is awarded every month! A Quiet Place – The Nutshell Technique applied!
In case you’ve been trapped in a dark basement for the past year or so, let me be the one to tell you: horror films have fully hit the mainstream — and are producing big box office bank. Don’t believe me? Just look at what won the 2017 Oscar for Best Original Screenplay (and the subject of my last Screencraft article: Jordan Peele’s excellent Get Out. And consider this spring’s sleeper hit A Quiet Place(written by John Krasinski, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods). A lot of writers (myself included) who didn’t consider themselves fans of the genre are rethinking horror. It makes sense when you think about it. As writers, we want to push our characters to confront their deepest fears and face their biggest challenges. We try to create stories that reveal universal truths in unordinary circumstances. Horror allows us to write about things below the surface and deep down in our psyches, things that we might not otherwise have the opportunity to explore. Alumni NewsHBO is shooting Katherine Craft‘s pilot script Halfway! Read about the project here. And the short film she wrote, June, is now airing on HBO, HBOGo and HBONow; check your local listings. It won first place at the HBO APA Visionaries-Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, won an AT&T InspirASIAN Award and made the shortlist for the 2018 BAFTA Student Film Awards. Matthew S. Alaniz‘s Little Brother made it to the semifinals of Bluecat and the quarterfinals of Scriptapalooza. Jeffrey Kerr‘s A Clear Duty made the quarterfinals of BlueCat. He and co-writer/co-director Ray Spivey are in preproduction for their feature mystery/thriller Writer’s Block. Three out of six writers chosen for the next AFF First Three Pages Live are alumni!
