In Autumn 2006, The Screenplay Workshop with Jill Chamberlain was founded, and our inaugural Master Class was held. It’s hard to believe that that was ten years ago and about a thousand writers later, but here we are! As our alumni will tell you (many of whom drove in from Houston and Dallas and beyond), you just won’t find a better place to learn the craft of screenwriting than at The Screenplay Workshop with Jill Chamberlain.
Don’t miss our big 10th anniversary party! Check the website for RSVP details and updates. Alumni: watch your email for details when they are announced.

The film world is taking notice of screenwriting expert Jill Chamberlain and lining up to learn more of the lessons laid out in her groundbreaking book The Nutshell Technique: Crack the Secret of Successful Screenwriting (University of Texas Press). The book is available online and in bookstores including Bookpeople in Austin and L.A.’s Writers Store.
Jill and her book were featured recently in Creative Screenwriting magazine. Editor Sam Roads said about the book, “it’s a clever, fresh way of analyzing structure. I’ve added The Nutshell Technique to my own writing toolbox.”
The interview, which is available at http://creativescreenwriting.com/nutshell, features Chamberlain sharing valuable material, including:
– the secret to how to create an ending that both surprises and satisfies an audience
– the critical difference between a story and a situation, which is a concept that eludes even experienced writers
– examples of her exclusive story “Nutshell”: the schematic she invented to diagram the central story of films
The Nutshell Technique is a revolutionary screenplay structuring method Jill invented and the cornerstone of The Screenplay Workshop’s curriculum. To get a sense of what a profound difference the Nutshell Technique makes, please check out the book trailer, featuring screenwriters who have worked with Jill and applied the method to their own work:
Austin Film Festival had its most competitive year yet — a whopping 9,100 entries were received! Alumni whose scripts were honored as Second Rounders (AFF’s term for quarterfinalists) include Shruti Saran, Katherine Craft, Hannah Feller, and — with TWO different scripts — Liz Belile! (all four of these writers are featured in the Nutshell Technique book trailer! 🙂 Also named Second Rounders were Joyce Harlow and Stephanie Easterday. Congrats, ladies! (AFF was just announcing script honorees as the newsletter was going to press, so if I missed you, please let me know & I’ll include you in the next issue).
Hannah Feller was a PAGE semifinalist with her screenplay The Money Flight and a Scriptapalooza semifinalist with The Wrong War.
Dave Pantano‘s feature screenplay Backfired was honored as a PAGE quarterfinalist and received 3rd Place in the Williamsburg International Film Festival’s script competition.
Writer/director Lisa Belcher was nominated for Best Texas Director at Austin Revolution Film Festival for her film The Gift.
Master Class alum (and former The Screenplay Workshop intern) Stefan Allen is now the Operations Manager at Austin Film Festival. He’s currently recruiting volunteers for AFF, specifically for the position of Filmmaker Liaision; for more info please email him at email@example.com.
Speaking of AFF, I’ll be returning as a panel moderator and pitch competition judge. Look for me at the Festival and please say “hi” if you see me. -Jill Chamberlain
